On Tuesday, a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF) was held by video conference. During the conference, the head coach of the student national team and the regulations of the Lithuanian 3 × 3 championship were approved as well as the official calendar of LKF events was expanded.
For the head coach role of the student national team, Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL) has offered the candidacy of Utena Juventus head coach – Žydrūnas Urbonas. With the approval of the majority of the members of the LKF Executive Committee, this candidacy was approved and Žydrūnas Urbonas was appointed to lead the Lithuanian student national team.
Žydrūnas Urbonas’ candidacy was not considered by the LKF skills committee, however, it was submitted directly to the Executive Committee for a vote, as he was appointed to lead the Lithuanian boys’ U18 national team at a previous meeting. However, due to the difficulties caused by the global pandemic, FIBA will only make a final decision on the European Youth Championships in May.
“At the suggestion of LKL President Remigijus Milašius, his candidacy to coach the Lithuanian student basketball team, which is the reserve team of the country, was submitted for consideration. The members of the Executive Committee approved the nomination. We will consider the candidate for the position of U18 coach after the final decision issued by FIBA on the youth championships that are expected to take place this summer”, – said LKF Secretary General Mindaugas Špokas.
During the meeting, the regulations of the Lithuanian 3 × 3 championships were also approved and the official calendar of LKF events was expanded.
