TV3 media group to release a series of documentaries to celebrate Lithuanian basketball 100th anniversary

Basketball is the second religion in Lithuania, so currently not only sports fans, but also the nation is fully focused on the Olympic qualifying basketball tournament in Kaunas. However, TV3 media group, Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF) and production organisation Videometra have prepared even better news for basketball enthusiasts.

The documentary cycle “House of basketball” dedicated to the centenary of Lithuanian basketball will premier soon.

It would probably be difficult to find a person in the country who would not admire the achievements of Lithuanian basketball.

Already next year we will celebrate the centenary of Lithuanian basketball, marked by impressive victories, invaluable moments and the brightest names in the sport of Lithuanian basketball – not only players, but also coaches and fans. There is no doubt that basketball has made a huge impact on Lithuania itself, and the documentary cycle will reveal the cultural, social and political significance of sporting events.

“For many years now, the TV3 media group has been accompanying the Lithuanian men’s basketball team at every step, and with this beautiful initiative, we are also contributing to the sport and giving a gift to all fans. It is symbolic that the documentary will premier this summer, when sport is becoming a major theme and Lithuanian national team is fighting in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Kaunas. The centenary of Lithuanian basketball is an important date for our whole country, and the documentary cycle, which will be shown throughout the year until 2022, will illuminate the most impressive moments of this sport and will make a great contribution to the whole world of sports. Lastly, the most important and most significant – series of documentaries is a gift from our media group to „House of basketbal”, – said Arvydas Rimas, TV3’s creative director.

The first series of this basketball documentary project will be released this summer. Later, each month up until the centenary of Lithuanian basketball will see a new release.

„This is an international ambition and initiative. This documentary will be different in a way that it is not a local narrative, but a story about Lithuania’s footprint from the world’s most famous basketball faces. This is how we bring the message about the country’s basketball and the international context”, – said Rolandas Skaisgirys, the owner of Videometra.

The first basketball game in Lithuania was played in 1922, between the temporary capital city national team and the Lithuanian Physical Education Union. This match is considered to be the beginning of basketball in our country.

“I think the 100th anniversary is a solid reason to remember the history, and everything that happened in basketball. Fostering history and all the things that lie precisely because of history and our achievements are a good educational tool for the younger generation. We have something to remember and we can be proud of it”, – said Arvydas Sabonis, President of LKF.
